Turn WhatsApp chats into buyers: what to do once the chat starts

Click-to-WhatsApp ads can bring in buyer chats cheaply, but the sale depends on the reply. Four retail cases and a playbook for what happens next.

A click-to-WhatsApp ad does one thing well: it starts a conversation with someone who has a question. For a phone, a laptop or a water purifier, that is often the right first step. The buyer wants to check a price, a model or the stock before deciding, and a chat answers faster than a product page.

But a chat is not a sale. The ad's job is to start the right conversation. Your team's job is to finish it. Our view is that most of the value in these campaigns is won or lost in the gap between the two, so plan the reply as carefully as you plan the ad.

Here is what four retail campaigns of ours show about the first half, and a playbook for the second.

Why a chat beats a page for a considered buy

For a product with questions attached, a chat keeps the buyer talking to you while they decide. A link to a product page can lose them to the next tab, and to the next seller.

For an electronics retailer in Qatar and the UAE, every ad was built to open a chat rather than send people to a catalogue. In Qatar the campaigns produced 784+ messaging conversations against 288 link clicks. In the UAE, $345.84 across 10 campaigns brought 1,022 conversations at an average of $0.34 each.

A water purifier brand in Kerala ran direct-to-WhatsApp funnels alongside instant forms. Kannur alone produced 307 WhatsApp leads at ₹88.88 each. A form gives you a name and a number. A WhatsApp lead has usually asked something already, and for a product that comes with as many questions as a purifier, that gives the salesperson a head start.

Give people a reason to message now

A chat needs a trigger. "Message us" is weak. "Ask about the launch offer" is much stronger, because it gives the buyer a reason to write today rather than one day.

A phone retailer in the UAE and Qatar built its campaigns around the phone calendar. In the UAE in July 2026, each of 12 campaigns had its own sales angle, from flagship launches to summer deals and Onam festive promotions. Together they brought 860 conversations at an average of AED 0.96, and the flagship campaigns came in at AED 0.48 to AED 0.68 per conversation. In Qatar, across August and September 2026, pre-booking posts for flagship releases drew 2,028+ engagements, and the best bundle sets cost QAR 0.47 to QAR 0.84 per result.

A bundle is a good reason to message. It moves the comparison away from one handset's price and towards what comes with it, and that is a question a seller can win on more than price.

The electronics retailer used the UAE calendar the same way: Onam, back to school, summer savings, September flash deals and iPad promotions. Its best UAE campaigns brought conversations in at $0.21 to $0.27 each.

Keep chats local, and count the new customers

An electronics retail chain in Kerala, with stores run by the company and by franchise partners, paired broad reach and video campaigns with hyper-local messaging sets, each aimed at a small area. From 1 January to 31 August 2026, the work ran to 382 campaigns and 146,924 messaging conversations. About 73% of them, 107,759, were with brand-new customers, and the core retail sets held at ₹17.80 to ₹18.51 per lead.

That share of new customers matters more than the total. A chat with an existing customer is useful. A chat with someone who has never bought from you is how a business grows.

The ad starts the chat. The reply decides the sale.

What to do once the chat starts

The figures above stop at the conversation. The sale happens after it. What follows is our general playbook for that part: the habits that turn a chat into a buyer in any shop, showroom or service business.

  • Reply while they are still choosing. Phone and electronics buyers compare the same product across several sellers, and the shop that answers first often settles the comparison. Make sure someone is on WhatsApp during the hours your ads run.
  • Have the first answers ready. Most chats open with the same questions: price, stock, delivery or installation, and what comes with it. Keep short, accurate replies to hand.
  • Ask one useful question back. Which model, for whom, and by when. It shows you are listening and tells you how ready the buyer is.
  • Send the chat to the right store. For a chain, route each conversation to the branch nearest the buyer, so the next step is a visit they can make.
  • Agree a next step in every chat. A store visit, a pre-booking, a quote for a business buyer, or a call at a set time.
  • Label every chat with its campaign and outcome. Without that, you can count chats but not sales.
  • Follow up the quiet ones. A buyer who stopped replying may simply be busy. A polite nudge the next day costs nothing.

Questions business owners ask

Are click-to-WhatsApp ads better than lead forms?

They suit different buyers. A chat suits someone with a question now; a form suits someone who would rather be called when it suits them. The water purifier brand ran both side by side so neither group was lost. If your product needs explaining, lead with WhatsApp and keep a form alongside it.

How fast should we reply to a WhatsApp enquiry from an ad?

As fast as you reasonably can, during the hours your ads are running. A buyer comparing prices may message several shops at once, and the first useful reply often wins. If nobody can answer at certain times of day, run fewer ads at those times.

How do I know which chats turned into sales?

Tag each conversation with the campaign it came from and record the outcome: bought, visited, booked or lost. Then compare campaigns on sales, not on chats. We explain why in judge ads on sales, not leads.
